What Is Bias Binding, What’s It For?
The most essential accessory in the textile industry; it gives fabric edges a professional finish and enhances the stitching.
Bias binding consists of thin strips obtained by cutting plain woven fabrics at a 45-degree diagonal angle, known as the bias angle. The Turkish word “biye” is used to mean edging or binding, and it is known worldwide as “bias binding.” Thanks to this diagonal cut, bias binding gains a flexible structure and can easily follow curved edges.
Bias binding covers the raw edges of cut fabric and gives garments a professional finish. It also helps prevent seam wear, extends the life of the fabric and adds character to the garment.
Bias binding is made from plain woven fabric cut on the bias, stretches by 5–10%, and is used for edge finishing. Ribbing, on the other hand, has a knitted rib structure, offers 50–100% stretch, and is used for necklines, cuffs and hems.
